Charles Sturt Winery is a producer of premium table, sparkling and fortified wines. It is an integral part of Australia’s leading wine science school and is at the forefront of viticulture practices and winemaking techniques. 


  • In 1893 the University vineyard at Wagga Wagga was planted with grapes as part of the experimental farm established following the formation of the NSW Department of Agriculture in 1880.
  • The wine science and viticulture teaching program was established at Wagga Wagga in 1976.
  • A professional management team has been running the winery since 1990.
  • The wine is made in Wagga in a purpose-built winery constructed in 2002. It is a commercial winery, students are involved but the winemaking is controlled by the professional team led by Andrew Drumm.
  • Proceeds from the sale of wine support the research and education programs in the School of Agricultural and Wine Sciences.
  • The University acquired the Orange campus in 2005.
  • The Orange vineyard of 18 Ha is planted to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
  • The Wagga vineyard of 6 Ha is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Muscat with small, experimental plantings of Aglianico, Dolcetto and Fiano.
  • We also source fruit from other regions in NSW principally Tumbarumba, Hilltops and Gundagai.
  • We make approximately 10,000 cases annually.
  • We have two Cellar Doors – Wagga operates seven days a week; Orange operates Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Charles Sturt University Winery is managed by Andrew Drumm, Winemaker. The team is Geoff Cook, Viticulturist; Justin Byrne, Marketing Manager; Narrelle Ingold, Winery Sales Coordinator; and Madi Ney and Dan Conlin, our Trainee Winemakers.
